How to Delete a Virus in Command Prompt

Computer viruses enter your computer without your knowledge or permission. While most of them get in while you are browsing the Web, some viruses may also enter through certain software or programs. Viruses can do considerable damage to your computer such as causing data loss or your hard drive to crash. The easiest way to remove a virus is by using an antivirus program. However, you can also use the command prompt in your Windows operating system to delete the virus, assuming you know the name of the virus.

Instructions

    • 1
Click on the "Start" button and select "Run."
    • 2
Type "cmd" without the quotes in the dialog box. Press "Enter." This will launch a separate window with a command prompt.
    • 3
Type "DEL <filename>.txt" without the quotes and hit the "Enter" key. Replace "<filename>" with the name of the virus you are trying to delete.
    • 4
Type "RMDIR <foldername>" without the quotes. Hit the "Enter" key. Replace "<foldername>" with the name of the folder infected with the virus. Make sure it is NOT a system folder or else it will affect your operating system.
    • 5
Type "EXIT" and press the "Enter" key. Restart your computer.
